# Numerology calculator

Enter your full name as it appears on your birth certificate and your date of birth. You get the six core numbers of a Pythagorean numerology chart, calculated the documented way, with master numbers 11, 22 and 33 kept.

## The six core numbers

| Number | Comes from | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| **Life Path** | Your date of birth | The main theme of your life, and the most quoted number |
| **Expression** (Destiny) | Every letter of your full birth name | Your talents and how you go about things |
| **Soul Urge** (Heart's Desire) | The vowels of your name | What you want most, deep down |
| **Personality** | The consonants of your name | How other people see you at first |
| **Birthday** | The day of the month you were born | A particular gift that supports your Life Path |
| **Maturity** | Life Path plus Expression | What you grow into, usually from your forties |

## How the calculator works

Each letter gets a value from 1 to 9 in alphabetical order: A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on to I and R, which are 9. The letters are added, and the total is reduced by adding its digits until one digit remains, unless it reaches the master numbers 11, 22 or 33, which are kept.

The Life Path reduces the month, day and year separately before adding them. Adding every digit of the date at once is a common shortcut that sometimes invents a master number that is not there. [How to calculate a Life Path number](/blog/how-to-calculate-a-life-path-number) shows the difference.

A few conventions vary between numerologists, and this calculator uses the most common one each time:

- **Y** counts as a consonant.
- **Middle names** count in the name numbers.
- **Accents** are dropped (é is valued as e), and letters such as ø and ß are written as o and ss. Russian Cyrillic names are valued with the Russian table.

The calculator runs on the same engine as [Simple Numerology API](/numerology-calculator-api), so a chart here matches the API's answer for the same name and date. The [API reference](/docs#conventions) documents every convention.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which name should I use for numerology?

Use your full name at birth, as written on your birth certificate, including middle names. Numerologists read a name you have taken since (after marriage, for instance) as a separate influence, not as a replacement.

### Why does another calculator give me a different number?

Calculators disagree on whether Y is a vowel, whether middle names count, how accented letters are valued, and whether the Life Path is reduced in parts or all at once. This calculator documents its choice for each one, listed above.

### Is my name stored?

No. The name and date you enter are used to calculate your numbers and are not stored. The form is sent in the body of the request, not in the address, so it never appears in a URL or a log.
