# Soul Urge number calculator

The Soul Urge number, or Heart's Desire, comes from the vowels of your full birth name. It describes what you want most from life, beneath what other people see.

## How the Soul Urge number is calculated

1. Write out your full birth name, middle names included.
2. Keep only the vowels: A (1), E (5), I (9), O (6) and U (3).
3. Add their values and reduce the total by adding its digits, keeping 11, 22 or 33 if you reach one.

For "Maria Garcia", the vowels are A, I, A, A, I, A: 1 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 1 = 22, a master number.

## Is Y a vowel?

It depends who you ask, and it changes the answer for many names. This calculator counts Y as a consonant, the most common rule. Some numerologists count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in "Lynn" or "Mary". [Is Y a vowel in numerology?](/blog/is-y-a-vowel-in-numerology) compares the rules, and the [API](/name-numerology-api) lets you choose one per request.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Soul Urge the same as Heart's Desire?

Yes. Soul Urge, Heart's Desire and Inner Self are names for the same number, the one calculated from the vowels of the full birth name.

### Why does my Soul Urge differ from another calculator's?

Usually because of Y. A calculator that counts Y as a vowel adds its value (7) to the vowels, and that changes the total. Middle names and accented vowels are the other common reasons.

### What is the difference between Soul Urge and Personality?

The Soul Urge comes from the vowels and describes your inner motivation. The [Personality number](/personality-number-calculator) comes from the consonants and describes the impression you make on others. Together they add up to your Expression number.
